Gentlemen. If we are to truly entertain the prospect that we may very well create our very own IP, then we must educate ourselves. We must play, read and watch as much contemporary or classic pieces of horror that we can, however since we're all from /v/ here, let's start with video games. What are some must play vidya when it comes to horror? I'll start with the basics. There was also a Half-Life mod mentioned in the thread. It had a russian sort of name, if one of you guys remember it or had posted it, please put it in this thread, it looked very interesting. ;D Currently, I'm playing the Silent Hill series...I'm afraid to say that I haven't beaten any of them and have only played Silent Hill I...BUT BETTER LATE THAN NEVER RIGHT? That's probably the reason I made this thread.

Eternal Darkness is an amazing game, I feel like nobody has played it though....
I've played a lot of these but I don't know what to playnext... does anybody have any recommendations for some of the more obscure stuff on this list?

Honestly, some of those games are absolute trash with little to no horror elements done well, nor very remarkable. Most/all of the flash ones you can disregard. STALKER isn't that scary, just intense with Bloodsuckers mostly. Those Guro games are a joke, just disgusting shit, nothing terrifying about them. I think V:MB had one slightly frightening part with a Velociraptor and a mansion. The Path is a poorly coded joke of a game, not disturbing or eerie in the least, just hipster trash. Et cetera, et cetera.
Just post some games that frightened you and why, so that we can get a feel for each other and a basic understanding of what makes horror games scary.

I have not played Eternal Darkness, but I do have some respect for Silicon Knights. What made it so amazing to you? Perhaps I'll pick it up.

Your sanity is put into question as much as the characters are in the game. Lots of surreal elements in the gameplay plus great story telling / characters. It was a bit cheesy as times but I had a lot of fun playing it.

surrrrrre
also i think everyone would be better off just watching Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni anime I can't imagine a video game version of it being very good (granted I don't really like the anime either but some people I know apparently love it and it is certainly pretty damn creepy)
ghhhgg i got penumbra overture from the humble indie game bundle but i've barely even played any of those games and penumbra was kind of slow/clunky and couldn't hold my attention long enough, i guess i should try to actually play it today since it's apparently pretty scary i dunno
and oh god killer7 has the best story ever but it's hardly scary at all, it definitely ranks in mindfuck thanks to it's unneccesarily complex story and various parts where it is pretty damn weird

I just googled that name and it looks like some moe kinda art style, and I can't imagine myself being encaptured by it and scared to the bone. I can only imagine myself being disgusted through some sort of guro shit. Mind elaborating?

it's kind of like how eversion uses its really cute art style to make the transition from harmless to creepy more powerful. it's a lot like that. the anime even has some pretty harmless scenes where it just where it even throws in humor around there and whatnot, but mostly just a setup for the more fucked up scenes which aren't exactly extremely guro, but there's certainly a lot of gore. the biggest thing it has going for it is the shock factor
ps. like i said i don't like it, but at least the cute-ohgodwtf contrast between the art style and the actual subject matter is noteworthy i guess. we're supposed to look at this list in order to get the hang of various different ways horror games do things right?imo it's not worthy watching/playing this if you're not interested or skeptical, but those are my two cents.

That reminds me of Narutaru. Ridiculously cute, happy intro animation and the first few episodes are upbeat... but once the genocide starts kicking in, well...
Also I liked The White Chamber even though the art design was a bit odd at times... does anybody have any other good point-and-click vidya to recommend?

I've heard very good things about "Darkness Within". I can't exactly recount WHAT was said about it, I just remember people saying it's very creepy and what-not. Also, Phatasmagoria 2: A Puzzle of Flesh I heard was very good spoonyexperiment.com/category/phantasmagoria/

This is from the /v/'s recommended games wiki. The page that this was on specifies that this list contains many different subgenres and the player should research the game first. However, it would be a cool idea to make an essentials list.

However, it would be a cool idea to make an essentials list. That's what I wanted to go for. Recommendations from everybody for what shaped our perception on what horror is, and what we WANT to see. The list was just to get some ideas bouncing around.

I've played a lot of these but I don't know what to playnext... does anybody have any recommendations for some of the more obscure stuff on this list? i wanna play that shit, it looks awesome. also killer7 is pretty great! it's not really scary, i guess... kind of creepy though maybe. saya no uta is also pretty good, idk if i really enjoyed reading it though. i think it's supposed to be kind of sexy but it's just... ehuehuguahfuhefuhfug. bright in the screen is fun too, for a flash game. Honestly, some of those games are absolute trash with little to no horror elements done well, nor very remarkable. Most/all of the flash ones you can disregard.
